Clean & Shine
A study done at Harvard Medical School demonstrated that dogs who chew rawhide
instead of biscuits have cleaner teeth. But all rawhide is not the same.
Some are bleached and cleaned with cyanide. These are not good for your dog.
Look for American made and processed rawhides as they are generally untreated, and therefore healthier. For example,
Chew-eez has just come out with rawhide for those dogs who refuse to brush.
They have covered it with a dental enzyme that cleans their teeth with every chew.
See your veterinarian for a full line of dental products that are right for your pet’s teeth.

Puppy Love
Pregnancy in the female dog averages 63 days. The size of the litter will generally be consistent
with the overall size of the breed (e.g.—big dog=big litter). The puppies should be examined for general
health and to have their tails docked and dewclaws removed, if appropriate for the breed, at two to four days of age. The eyes and ears,
which are sealed at birth, will begin to open at two weeks of age.
The teeth will start to appear at one month, which is when they should be weaned off their mother
onto puppy food. Adult teeth will begin to appear from 4-6 months—all 42 of them! Neutering
should take place before sexual maturity occurs, which will be at 8-9 months of age.
Full growth and maturity of bones occurs at around 11/2 years, depending on the breed of dog.

A Bone to Pick . . .
How often we are tempted to give that big, juicy steak bone to our jealous four-legged friend. DON’T! Bones are dangerous to your dog. Steak or chicken bones can splinter and become lodged inside your pet, leading to serious infections and possible surgery. A safer option is to use chew toys and rawhides from your neighborhood pet store. But be sure to take these toys away as they get smaller or break into pieces to safeguard against accidents.
